Could You Deal With A Survival Situation?

By Steve Thibeault

There are a large variety of circumstances where you could find yourself, suddenly in a survival or medical position. If you have never experienced this, the odds are that you may well do at some stage in your life. This may especially happen if you are on a camping trip, or expedition or in a very remote location or environment of some kind. Don't forget also, that in the United States we are all vulnerable to natural disasters and mother nature could deliver us a survival situation at any time.

The prepared family is the smart family and everyone should have some specially prepared gear or kit to help them get through a survival situation. Such emergencies can often strike out of the blue and will give very little if any time for preparation so you should think this through and try and address all potential hazards as best you can.

When something goes wrong and you need to wait for professional help, or even rescue, an emergency survival kit will enable you to look after the situation and provide the necessary protection that you need. You may feel vulnerable, but if you have made adequate preparations in advance, you will stand every chance of getting through the situation.

Whatever the position you are likely to face, there are different types of survival kit specifically made for the purpose. For example, you could carry one in your vehicle, keep it at home, or when you go out into the wilderness on an expedition. Don't think that you only need a first aid kit if you are going on this kind of adventure, either as you should keep one handy at all times.

Every type of survival situation is different, but you will almost invariably need shelter, first aid, fire, food and water to get you through it. If you have a typical family of four, you should invest in an emergency survival kit designed for that family size, which can sustain you for up to 72 hours and get you through your situation if needed.

You will not always have adequate notice of an impending disaster. While a hurricane can be tracked and we will have plenty of advance warning, other weather phenomena such as a flash flood, tornado or earthquake will strike without warning. As such, you should have a comprehensive survival kit in a known location and every member of the family should be aware.

Do some research now to find an appropriate kit to help you out in the event of a survival situation of any kind. Don't rue the fact that you did not do this, when it is too late.

Adequate choices are available to cover every type of situation if you plan in advance. You could pick up a multi-day, multiperson kit if appropriate or just a pocket pak, but do be prepared. If you are an adventurer by heart or have experience you will probably already have taken into account your survival situation needs.
